- Friday, October 29 – Diwali, the Hindu festival of lights. The date is based on the calendar in India, and local communities may celebrate on a nearby day.
- Sunday, October 31 – Halloween.

October planning tips
- Plan Halloween on a Sunday. Trick-or-treating will happen on a school night, with school the next morning. Agree on a time to be home, and lay out Monday's clothes and backpack in advance. Some towns set their own trick-or-treat hours, so check locally.
- Sort costumes early. Write a costume deadline two weeks before Halloween in each child's column, and note any school costume parade.
- Prepare for the time change. Daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 7. Put a reminder at the bottom of October.
- Book conferences. Many schools hold parent-teacher conferences in October or November. Write the time in the right column the day you book it.
- Start thinking about Thanksgiving. Decide who is hosting and who is traveling, because November fills up quickly.
