This gives many families two long weekends in a row: December 24–26 and December 31–January 2.

December planning tips
- Make one master list. Gifts, cards, food and travel compete for attention in December. Give each task a day and a person, rather than one long list that nobody owns.
- Protect a few quiet days. It is easy to say yes to every party. Leave at least one evening a week blank on purpose.
- Plan for Christmas Eve as a day off. Because the observed holiday is Friday, December 24, many people will be off work that day, but schools and some employers follow their own schedules.
- Prepare for winter break. Write down who is home with the children on which days, and add a few simple plans, such as baking, sledding or a library visit.
- Review the year together. On New Year's Eve, look back through the calendars you printed this year. Choose one tradition to repeat in 2028.
